MAY arrives  with CHESTER and YORK meetings to look forward to amongst others.

Tuesday      May 31

A quieter day to look forward to on Wednesday - had to be really.

But after yesterday's write up I feel it is time to change my approach, with June and lots of evening racing on the horizon I need to cut back, otherwise the blog-writing will become a burdensome, time-consuming chore and I don't want that - DO I?

Starting from tomorrow (this post) I will be concentrating on pointing out the less-exposed (no more than 2 runs, generally) runners who may have the ability to win or, at least, run well. When it comes to reviewing the race I will comment on how those horses ran and flag up runners that caught the eye.

Nottingham 1,55

Puffable (KODIAC)  - a half-sister to Mesquite (HIGH CHAPARRAL), winner of an ordinary 7f. Novice event on Lingfield's A.W.  before going off to win a race in Riyadh.

Swingalong (SHOWCASING) - a half-sister to Manaabit (KODIAC) , the winner of an 8f. fillies handicap at Ascot in 2020.

Ripon  5.00

Eyeeye (FSS EXPERT EYE) - a half-brother to Steady Pace (DARK ANGEL), a smart handicapper over 6-7 furlongs.

Curragh  5.10

Auguste Rodin (DEEP IMPACT) - the first foal from Rhododendron (GALILEO) a very smart miler who won the Lockinge at Newbury in 2018.

Shadowed (CARAVAGGIO) - a half-brother to Queenship (EXCELEBRATION) , the winner of an 8f. Listed race at Cork last year for this yard.

Curragh  5.45

Age Of Kings (KINGMAN) - will he or won't he run today?- showed great promise when only beaten a nose by Shartash on debut, he is the first foal of Turret Rocks (FASTNET ROCK) a smart miler in Group 1 company as a 2-y-o for Jim Bolger.

Kodi Noir (FSS KESSAAR) - a half-brother to Forgotten Hero (HIGH CHAPARRAL), a useful 10f. handicapper.

New Image (FRANKEL) - a half-brother to Grand Jete (DANSILI), a useful French handicapper who moved to race in U.S.A and dead-heated for second in the Grade 1  9.5f. Beverley D stakes at Arlington in 2017.

Kempton  5.55

Full Prime (MEHMAS) - Didn't show a lot on debut at Windsor, she is a half-sister to Lady Dancealot (SIR PRANCEALOT), a useful 6f. handicapper.

Palm Lily (FSS EXPERT EYE) - a half-sister to Burnt Sugar (LOPE DE VEGA) , a smart handicapper over 6-7 furlongs.

Queen Kerenza (KINGMAN) - a half-sister to Dubai Poet (LOPE DE VEGA), third in a 8f. Group 3 at Newmarket, arace won by this tear's 2,000 Guineas winner, Croebus.

Monday     May 30           4.30 p.m.

Eight 2-y-o races on a Tuesday -  "who'da thunk it?"

Newbury           1.00         6f.  Maiden    Fillies                    Class 5            Good

Clenched ( CITYSCAPE) despite being green put in a promising debut when a running on fifth at Haydock, bound to improve for that. Rage Of Bamby (FSS SAXON WARRIOR) is a half-sister to Amalaura (RAVEN'S PASS) an Italian Listed winner over 7f.

Rage of Bamby a non-runner. Clenched the 10/11 fav. was never going and was one of the first beaten. The race went to Rich (FSS CRACKSMAN) who went 2.5 lengths clear inside the final half-furlong.

Newbury   1.35         6.5f.        Maiden                       Class 5                 Good

The two with form in the book look to have good chances to get off the mark; Al Khazneh (EXCEED AND EXCEL) finished second to Sunny Orange at Leicester despite missing the break and running green. Seductive Power (KODI BEAR) made a promising debut fifth in what might have been a hot race over this course earlier this month. Two newco mers worth a look; Stormbuster (DUBAWI) is a full-brother to Arabian Queen a very smart filly who won the Group 1 Juddmonte International over 10f. at York. Surely Not (NATIONAL DEFENSE) is a half-brother to With Thanks (CAMACHO) the winner of a 7f. Group 3 in Ireland.

Al Khazneh a non-runner. Quite an impressive debut for Isaac Shelby (NIGHT OF THUNDER) racing prominently throughout he ran on much the strongest and was going further ahead close home. Seductive ran another creditable race for fourth place just behind Stormbuster, who the Racing Post race-reader gave the 'eye-catcher' award. Surely Not (SP 80/1) never got into the race.

Newbury   2.10              6.5f                 Maiden          Class 5                 Good

Skipping over the one's who have had a run and the most interesting of the debutants is Prairie Chief (FSS SIOUX NATION) he is a half-brother to Insinuendo (GLENEAGLES) a very consistent 8-10f. Group 2/3 filly.  Another to consider is Chindwin (FSS SAXON WARRIOR) is a half-brother to a useful 10f. handicapper.

The first three pulled away from the rest inside the final furlong and all three could be smart. The winner, Sydneyarms Chelsea (FSS SIOUX NATION) was out the back early but made ground to take the lead inside the final, looking a touch green when ridden but finding plenty. Second-placed John Chard VC (ARDAD) raced just off the pace and was keeping on well, beaten 0.75 of a length. Bresson (DUBAWI) the 15/8f. had to settle for third a further length behind. Prairie Chief (slowly away and too keen) and Chindwin (raced prominently until weakening) finished 5th. & 6th.

Leicester     1.20                             5f.                       Novices          Class 4        Good to Firm

Having raced freely throughout it was a good debut effort by New Definition (INVINCIBLE SPIRIT) to finish second to Lady Bullet (a winner again since) and he must have every chance of breaking his maiden here. Of the others Deguello (DARK ANGEL), who is making his debut, is a half-brother to Springbank (GALILEO) a useful Irish middle-distance handicapper.

New Definition raced prominently but had no answer when the winner Bolt Action (FSS KESSAAR) quickened over a furlong out. Deguello, after a slow start never got competitive.

Leicester                   1.55                 6f.                       Maiden       Class 4         Good to firm

Tricky little race this one. Catch The Paddy (NO NAY NEVER) and  Show Respect (SHOWCASING) showed quite a bit of promise when making their debuts, whilst there are are number of interesting newcomers. Ferensby (FSS ZOUSTAR) is a half-sister to Festive Star (GOLDEN HORN) a smart 8-10f. listed and handicap performer, being the most interesting. I'll dodge this one.

With a furlong to run it looked as if it would be close run thing between Catch The Paddy and Show Respect but from that point the latter forged ahead to win quite comfortably. The third home, Rabaah, is worth making a note of, missed the break quite badly but was soon back on terms but unable to get a clear run but keeping on close home. Ferensby, was a non-runner.

Tipperary  6.15                   5f.                       Good to Firm

Open Market (STARSPANGLEDBANNER) who won on debut at Cork is a full-sister to Great Wide Open who ran second in Grade 1 company in the U.S.A. Red Sky At Knight (STARSPANGLEDBANNER) a half-sister to Saryshagann (Iffraaj) , a useful sprint handicapper in 2018 who is now running in hurdle races. I think I'm learning my lesson with the Irish races.   DUCK!

Lady Tilbury followed up her Cork win by coming up the far side with a prolonged run and keeping on well. Open Market probably had too much use made of her, running freely in the lead until weakening into 6th. Red Sky At Night made a decent debut running on for 5th. after starting slowly.

Thirsk  5.22              6f.                    Maiden       Class  5                   Good

Noor Bano's (KODI BEAR) third on debut at this course was enhanced somewhat by the winner of that race, Maria Branwell, winning the National Stakes at Sandown last week so he has an obvious chance. Indian Be (FSS SIOUX NATION) is one to consider as he is a half-brother to Anhar (KINGMAMBO) a useful middle-distance handicapper.

Noor Bano disappointed finishing 6th. The winner, King's Crown (STARSPANGLEDBANNER), made all, travelling easily, until coming under inside final furlong but kept on well. Indiana Be made a nice debut in finishing a close-up second.

Yarmouth         5.59                5f.             Novices           Class 5                Good to Firm

Not taken with any of those that have form so I'm going to suggest Not For Profit (PROFITABLE) a half-brother to Bellosa (AWTAAD) the winner of a Listed 7f. race at Newmarket last year.

A comfortable victory for Kuwait City (PEARL SECRET) coming from the rear up the stand rail with a swooping run to win with some ease. Not For Profit was too keen and weakened to finish last.

Sunday   May 29                          2.30 p.m.

After yesterday's racing I should give up..............but we are not going to do that.....ARE WE?

Monday's 2-y-o races previewed.

Lingfield        2.55              7f.     Maiden  Fillies                Class 5

Lakota Sioux (FSS SIOUX NATION) put up a great display of tail-twirling and flashing to help propel her into a close third on her debut at Haydock and will be fun to watch, win or not. Miska (KODIAC) is a full-sister to Gifted Master, a very smart sprinter who won the 2018 running of the Steward's Cup at Goodwood along with wins at Group 3 and Listed level and was precocious enough to win his 2-y-o debut in mid-April. Sentimentality (FARHH) is a full-sister to Move Swiftly, the winner of a Group 2 over a mile at Royal Ascot in 2019.

An easy win for Lakota Sioux (perhaps she should carry a penalty to counter the boost she gets from that tail action). Miska took second place and Sentimentality fourth, a long way behind but OK debuts.

Redcar      1.25               6f.            Maiden  Fillies             Class 4.     Good to Firm

The two that have had a run don't look good enough. I'll put up two newcomers with claims. Nashur (FSS HAVANA GREY) is a half sister to Menai Bridge (CABLE BAY) a useful 10f. handicapper. Queenmambo (SEA THE MOON) is a half-sister to Azmeel (AZAMOUR) a Group 3 winning 10f. horse.

I don't think this was a particularly strong race, it went to the strong-finishing Miss Brazen (BRAZEN BEAU), Nashur made a decent debut, disputing the lead entering the final furlong but having to settle for second. Queenmambo finished a distant last.

Redcar          2.00.        6f.              Maiden Fillies           Class 4             Good to Firm

Again, in this second division of the race I think it will go to a debutante and my two of interest are: Coco Jamboo (FSS MASSAAT) , a half-sister to Last Surprise (NO NAY NEVER) . a useful sprint handicapper and a winner on his racecourse debut. The other one is HIGH FLYING (FSS U.S. NAVY FLAF) who strictly speaking isn't making her debut but she got so upset in the stalls at Ripon that I'm discounting that as a race (executive decision!!) she is a half-sister to Blind Beggar (EQUIANO) who was a decent sprint handicapper for Richard Fahey last year but is now in the Ger Lyons yard.

The 6/5 fav Glorious Angel (COTAI GLORY) made all and won this comfortably. Coco Jamboo who was disputing the lead a furlong weakened to finish fourth. High Flying(66/1) never got involved (jockey reported that the filly fly-leapt from the stalls).

Ayr  4 50                   6f.                   Novices                     Class 5         Good

I can't find anything at all of interest in this contest. DUCK!

Clear Point (ARDAD) a very well-supported favourite was a very comfortable winner.

Windsor          5.40              6f.            Novices                 Class 5        Good

Raducanu (FSS MASSAAT) overcame a slow start and trouble in running to run on well to claim third place late on behind Panama, over this course and distance and should improve for the run. Newcomer Guiteau (FSS JAMES GARFIELD) is a half-brother to Pearl Glory (COTAI GLORY) who ran second in a Group 3 7f. race earlier this month.

Raducanu, the 5/2 favourite led until weakening over one out. In a finish of short-heads Priors Dell (CHARM SPIRIT) just holding off the fast-finishing Guiteau, who after getting into the usual nonsense on the Windsor rails trying to get a run couldn't quite peg the winner back. Tuddenham Mill (HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR) another short head behind.

Saturday    May 28             7.00  a.m.

There is no flat racing at all scheduled for Sunday. Gives my two fingers a bit of a rest.

Friday          May  27              3.30 p.m.

Preview of Saturday's 2y-o racing.

Navan   1.05                 5.5f.        Fillies   Maiden                  Good

Olivia Maralda's (KODIAC) narrow defeat over 6f, at the Curragh looks good enough to give her an excellent chance here. Silmaniya (FSS EXPERT EYE), who is making her debut is a half-sister to a Group 3 winning sprinter.

Don't know how I managed to miss Statuette (FSS Justify and a half-sister to Terrorism (CARAVAGGIO) the winner of last year's Group 1 2-y-o Cheveley Park, but miss it I did. An impressive 3 length winner on debut followed home by Olivia Maralda and Silmaniya.

Navan    1.40         5f.               Maiden                    Good

Age Of Kings (KINGMAN) was only beaten a nose on his debut behind Shartash at Naas and will be at quite short odds to get his nose in front this time. Bossy Parker (KODIAC) was a long way behind Little Big Bear when he made is debut at Naas but is sure to come on for that, he is a half-brother to Pogo (ZEBEDEE) the winner of a 8f. listed race at Windsor. Our old friend Midnight Toker (ACCLAMATION) turns up again, deserves to win a race for good attendance.

Age Of Kings, a non-runner once again! Wodao (SHOWCASING) the 2/1 favourite proving a comfortable winner. Bossy Parker and Midnight Toker both disappointing, unusual bad run from the latter.

Beverley.  2.05                  5f.                 Fillies       Class 2        Conditions               Good to Firm

A tight little race that's likely to be run at a breakneck pace, I'm hoping that Parr Fire (FSS JAMES GARFIELD) will find the late burst she found when getting up late to win on debut at Doncaster.

Parr Fire found this company much hotter than that she met at Doncaster and never figured.  It looked as if the very fast-starting Primrose Ridge (ACLAIM) would repeat an earlier all the way win over the course and distance but she was run down close home by Star Of Lady M (FSS HAVANA GREY) who put a disappointing Chester (course didn't suit?) run behind her and returned to winning form.

Beverley    3.15                5f.                   Colts and Geldings          Class 2     Conditions    Good to Firm

Whistle And Flute a likely runner at Royal Ascot has run two good races and is 15/8f. for this at the moment. I'm putting forward Corporate Raider ((PROFITABLE) as a win and place alternative, he is a half-brother to Fox Power (DARK ANGEL) the winner of a mile Listed event at Newcastle. Corporate Raider was tagged as an "eye-catcher", by the Racing Post, when 4th. on debut at Catterick.

Two surprises, Whistle And Flute wasn't the favourite and he finished last. Chateau (HAVANA GOLD) headed the market and justified the confidence by getting a run late on and catching Rogue Spirit (DARK ANGEL), who put in a gallant attempt to make all, inside the last half-furlong. The Ridler (BRAZEN BEAU) and J M Jungle (BUNGLE INTHEJUNGLE) were close up in third and fourth. Corporate Raider was out of his depth and never showed.

Chester             4.20                 6f.           Maiden         Class 2                Good

I'm struggling with this one, for a Class 2 it seems a weak field. Zephina (FSS ZOUSTAR) is now becoming rather exposed but she has been quite consistent and was a close 4th. at Haydock last time.

The meeting was abandoned due to unsafe ground before this race was due to be run.

Chelmsford          3.00                   6f.             Novices              Class  3        Polytrack

The four runner race that Centre Court (SHOWCASING) won at Newmarket was definitely not the strongest 2-y-o maiden ever run at the track but it is probably the best form shown by this field. Brave Emperor (FSS SIOUX NATION)  gave the impression to the Sky Racing team that he didn't enjoy the undulations of Chepstow when winning there last time, if that is so and he deals with the Polytrack he is an obvious danger.

Brave Emperor handled the course well enough (he did hang right 2 out) to win at 11/8f.

Salisbury         5.35                5f.                       Novices             Class 4                   Good to Firm

The race that Sunny Orange (FSS EXPERT EYE) won at Leicester isn't working out that well so perhaps a small interest in Lulworth Cove (NEW BAY) could be worthwhile. She is a half-sister to Great Page (RODERIC O'CONNOR) who as a 2-y-o with Richard Hannon won a Group 3 7f. in France and a 6f. Listed in Ireland and won on her 2-y-o debut at Windsor at the end of April 2015. Lulworth Cove is also trained by Hannon.

Well this completed, what was for me, a p*** poor day at the office. Lulworth Cove last of five. Rocking Ends (FSS HAVANA GREY) was the surprise (20/1) but comfortable winner despite ducking left on leaving the stalls.

Thursday           May    26

Due to time constraints (I have some walls that need a couple of coats of emulsion) the notes will probably be briefer than normal.

Friday's 2-y-o racing.

Brighton   1.00      5.5f.             Maiden            Class 5             Good

Jungle Fever (BUNGLE INTHEJUNGLE), green and unlucky in running on his debut at Musselburgh is a full-brother to Winter Power, the winner of last year's Group 1 5f. Nunthorpe at York. Zabble (FSS POET"S WORD) is a half-sister to a horse placed in a Listed 2-y-o event last year and who was forward enough to win on his racecourse debut in late April.

Jungle Fever broke well and made all, was being closed down at the finish by a much improved second run from It's Chico Time (Dark Angel) and Zabbie, who was running on nicely under a rather quiet ride after missing the break, a promising effort.

Carlisle  1.45      5f.      Novices        Class 4             Good

Find it difficult to choose between Carmela (FSS TASLEET) and Queen Of Deauville (SHOWCASING), slight preference given to the latter, a half-sister to the useful 7f. Listed placed and handicapper, Dutch Treat (DUTCH ART).

Queen Of Deauville was a non-runner leaving four in the race, that soon became three as Mint Edition decanted his rider inside the first furlong. Carmela, made all but had to battle to hold off the strong challenge of Cold Case (SHOWCASING) throughout the final furlong and a half. A nice debut run by the second.

Fairyhouse  6,20        6f.  Maiden          Good

Broadhurst (NO NAY NEVER) will be expected to win after his promising second on debut but I'd like to draw your attention to two newcomers. Spirit Genie (INVINCIBLE SPIRIT) is a full-brother to Emmaus the winner of a 7f. Listed race at Leicester as a 4-y-o and then going on to be placed in a graded race at Woodbine. Skip James (FSS EXPERT EYE), is a half-brother to a smart staying handicapper.

Broadhurst was a non-runner. Pearling Path (HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE) having his second run was made favourite and after always racing prominently won with a bit in hand. Spirit Genie (second) and Skip James (third) made promising debuts, though the latter started slowly and was at the rear early and had to be ridden quite vigorously throughout.
Haydock                 7.25           7f.           Novices                   Class 4                Good

The newcomer Loyal Touch (NO NAY NEVER) makes a lot of appeal here. He is a half-brother to Sovereign (Galileo) the 2019 Irish Derby winner.

The meeting was abandoned (unsafe ground) before this race took place.

Pontefract     7.30               6f.                 Class.   2                 Conditions Stakes     Good to Firm

Breege (STARSPANGLEDBANNER) impressed when winning by 5 lengths on debut at Wetherby and will be difficult to beat but I'm going with the Acclamation colt, Rousing Encore, a half-brother to Majestic Dawn (DAWN APPROACH), the winner of a 10f. Listed race at Goodwood last Saturday. He has had two runs, the second of which (at Beverley) he won in good style despite not having the clearest of runs.

What I would call a satisfying result. Rousing Encore, made all and won unchallenged with the very hot favourite over two lengths behind.

Wednesday                          May       25               12.00 noon

A busy day for 2-y-o races on Thursday.

Ripon   1.20           6f.     Fillies    Novices                       Class  5                 Good

The Twilight Lady made no show in the Listed Marygate at York but should be happier back in this company. Lady Bullet (FSS JAMES GARFIELD) won on her debut at Doncaster despite racing keenly, she was keeping on well at the line, she is a half-sister to Ever Given (KODI BEAR) a smart 3-y-o sprint handicapper who was sharp enough to win on his 2-y-o debut. Just a mention for a newcomer, Mazyuna (FSS SIOUX NATION), a half-sister to a useful staying handicapper, Calvinist (HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR) who did win as a 2-y-o but over 10f.

Poor visibility for this race. Lady Bullet justified favouritism, always close up in a tightly-grouped field she ran on the best to win by 2.5 lengths from Mazyuna (nice debut), probably the unluckiest in the field was the fourth home, Lady Lavina (THE LAST LION) denied a run on several occasions but running on well late.

Yarmouth.  1.30                   7f.                  Novices             Class 5                 Good to Soft.

The two that have had a run haven't shown a lot so the winner should be making its debut. Alzahir (SEA THE STARS) is a half-brother to  the very smart Suedois (LE HAVRE) who won the 2017 running of an 8f. Grade 1 at Keeneland (Turf). He is favourite in the Racing Post betting forecast and looks the most likely winner.

Worth your while watching a replay of the race just for the classic "Thommo" finishing call! With two Charlie Appleby runners and one of Gosden's the form should be decent. Naval Power (TEOFILO) and Alzahir disputed the lead throughout and it was only on the nod that the former got his nose in front. In fourth place Shahbaz (FREE EAGLE) ran a lot better than his price of 33/1 suggested he would, after being slowly away he was running on nicely at the line.

Haydock      2.10          6f.                   Maiden                    Class  4                   Good

There was a lot to like about the debuts of both Banddar (DARK ANGEL) and Maxi King (BELARDO), the former finishing fifth in a very hot-looking Ascot race after missing the break and the latter caught the eye in a much more modest affair at Nottingham with a late run to sneak into second place on the line. Maxi King is a half-brother to Minzaal (MEHMAS) the winner of the 2020 running of the Group 2 2-y-o Gimcrack at York. Quite a few of the newcomers are well-related, I'll just pick out two. Mutaany (INVINCIBLE SPIRIT) is a half-brother to Massaat (TEOFILO) a very smart 7f. horse who won the Group 2 Hungerford at Newbury. The other is Gifted Angel (DARK ANGEL), a half-brother to Inverleigh (EXCELEBRATION), a Listed sprint winner in Ireland.

Banddar and Maxi King didn't live up to expectations and the race was won by the PROFTABLE colt, Scholarship. Racing just off the pace until coming through inside the final half-furlong to win comfortably. I must bring your attention to the third horse home, Sound Pressure (KODIAC) who after a slow start was last of all approaching the final furlong but then made relentless headway to be closing on the first two close home.

Carlisle           4.40                   5f.                       Fillies Maiden                Class  4            Good

No obvious form choice, I slightly favour Double O (FSS KESSAAR). Of the newcomers, the one that interests me is, One Of Our Own (FSS POET"S WORD), she is half-sister to Roll On Rory (MULLIONMILEANHOUR) a useful handicapper who won over 5-8 furlongs. I'll point out that there is an HAVANA GREY filly, Riverside Girl due to run (can she be ignored?) and I haven't missed that my long-shot project, Florida Filly (FSS SIOUX NATION ) is having her third run.

Wouldn't you know it, Florida Filly fourth at 100/1, in fairness she was some way behind the front three.  A very tight three-horse finish saw Mersea (BORN TO SEA) just get the better of Insolente (FSS HARRY ANGEL) and Double O ( FSS KESSAAR by a neck and a neck.

Carlisle         5.15                          6f.        Novices                Class     5         Good

Sanks A Million (PROFITABLE) just failed to get up with a late challenge behind Ramazan on debut over 5f. at Beverley, this stiff 6f. should suit. Indian Dream (FSS SIOUX NATION) is another who made a promising debut, despite missing the break and running green he was only beaten a half-a-length into second by Centre Court at Newmarket. I can't find any thing to get too excited about amongst the newcomers with only the FSS TASLEET, already gelded, Gethiptothetrip appealing, he is a half-brother to Timothy T (PASTORAL PURSUITS) was was third in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York way back in 2010.

Indian Dream played up in the stalls and was withdrawn. Sanks A Million tried to make all but was just caught in the last strides by a very strong late run by Dear My Friend (PIVOTAL) with Sol Cayo (HAVANA GOLD) also finishing well a short head behind. Gethiptothetrip was a further 6 lengths back in fourth.

Sandown    6.15             5f.                National Stakes              Listed                 Good to Soft

Tajalla (FSS KESSAAR) is the 6/5 fav. for this at the moment but I'm not convinced by the strength of that Newmarket run, nothing has come out and franked it. To me the form that Crispy Cat (ARDAD) looks the more reliable. There is room for improvement from a lot the runners but the second that Crispy Cat ran to Blackbeard looks good enough to take this.

Tajalla was a non-runner.  Crispy Cat went off 10/11.  It developed into a two-horse race, Crispy Cat settled on the rails was given a nice lead with Maria Branwell just behind on the rails , the favourite made his move switching off the rails approaching the final furlong , the filly covered the move but looked , to me, to have lost the race when showing a bit of greenness  but in fairness she buckled down and ran on gamely to win by a neck.

Tuesday     May  24                  12.30 p.m.

Three rather moderate races scheduled for Wednesday.

Hamilton  2.20                   5f.               Maiden                   Class    4               Good to Soft

Find it difficult to get too excited about this contest, it could be significant that the Johnston yard has booked William Buick to ride Explicit (FSS EXPERT EYE), recent years 109 rides, 17winners, 15.6% for a small profit, who possibly has the strongest form here. Rock Opera (FSS UNFORTUNATELY) should improve for his fourth on debut at Beverley. A newcomer of moderate interest is Unitarian (FSS TASLEET), a half-brother to a winner of a 7f. race as a 2-y-o.

Beverley.  2.40                 5f.           Claiming Stakes                 Class 6               Good

Of no interest to me from a breeding point of view. If desperate for interest, Intenso (CAMACHO) should be considered, I could see his trainer plotting something for this gelding.

Ripon        6f.             Maiden               Class   5             Good

Another event with little interest from the breeding angle but Between The Sticks's (CAPTAIN GERRARD) second to Panama at Windsor makes him a fairly strong form choice.

Monday         May   23             10.45 a.m.

Tuesday's 2-y-o races.

Lingfield      6.10                      6f.      Novices              Class 5              Polytrack

Malrescia's (ACCLAMATION) two runs suggest she's good enough to win this but is likely to be very short. One debutant of interest, Nibras Rainbow (FSS U.S.NAVY FLAG) is a half-brother to Rainbow Royal (PACO BOY) who, as a 2-y-o, won an Italian Group 3 over a mile.

Marescia (ACCLAMATION) wasn't as strong in the market as I had expected, just 5/6, and she completed a bloodless victory , making all and winning easily. Nibras Rainbow, showed at least  some ability even though he was 9 lengths back in third.

Newcastle  6.30                5f.                Fillies Novices            Class  4            Tapeta

Daytona Lady (BUNGLE INTHEJUNGLE) was made 11/10f. for her debut at Chelmsford and comfortably justified the confidence, took a big step up to hot Listed company at York and unsurprisingly didn't show a lot after having dodgy steering out of the stalls, prominent for a while before weakening and being eased. The company and the surface should suit and has to be considered. One of the newcomers has caught my eye, Queenie Rooney (HAVANA GOLD) is a full-sister to Fuente, a useful sprint handicapper who as a 2-y-o was placed in a Group 3 at Kempton. Queenie Rooney is with the same stable as Fuente had been.

I have to admit to getting quite excited watching this, Queenie Rooney, who looked ready for this on the TV shots from the paddock, after a dodgy break she could be seen travelling well and moving up on the far side of the field and as they approached the final furlong she looked to have a chance but the effort petered out and she finished third to debutante Elvenia (DARK ANGEL) beaten a neck and two lengths, Daytona Lady finished second.

Sunday                 May   22                    11.00  a.m.

Four 2-y-o races for our perusal on Monday.

Leicester   1.50              6f.                  Maiden          Class 5              Good to Firm

I can't get excited about any of those that have already had a run so I'll just mention two of the newcomers. Indiana Be (FSS SIOUX NATION) is a half-brother to Anhar (KINGMAMBO), a useful middle-distance handicapper who did win on his 2-y-o debut. Mystical Applause (ACLAIM), a half-brother to Rebel Streak (DARK ANGEL), a smart sprint handicapper who also ran third in a Group 3 5f. race at Newbury.

Indiana Be was a non-runner but the debut of Mystical Applause (ACLAIM) was quite promising. mid-field to halfway, headway inside final 2f. ran nicely for fourth. The race went to Blatant (BRAZEN BEAU) the 3/1 f. who made all and won comfortably.

Wolverhampton   2.40                        6f.        Fillies Novices            Class  5            Tapeta

Although Believing (MEHMAS) was well beaten by Mawj when making her debut at Newmarket it was still an encouraging performance and looks good enough to take this. Not a great deal of interest in those making their debut, best of them may be Dragon Glory (COTAI GLORY), a half-sister to Shepherd's Way (DARK ANGEL), a sprint handicapper who also ran second in a Listed 6f. event at Pontefract.

At 1/3 Believing (MEHMAS) wasn't much of a betting proposition but those who did fancy small but quick profits must have felt a little sick as the favourite reared up just as the stalls opened and gave the field lots of lengths start. That concern was quickly forgotten as she soon tagged herself on to the pace, she was soon bearing down on the lead and despite hanging left won with quite a bit in hand.

Roscommon   5.00              7f.                       Maiden                    Yielding

This should go straight to the 'too difficult' file but I can't resist. Lasmuigh (FSS TASLEET) is a colt I have mentioned before, he is a half-brother to Pleasure Gains (CAPE CROSS) a smart 8-9f. horse based in Hong Kong. He has had two runs and his second effort was a big improvement over the first, he finished 5th. beaten less than 4 lengths by Harry Time at Navan over 5.5f., the seven furlongs he runs here will hopefully suit. The other suggestion is Shadow Creek (GLENEAGLES), a half-brother to Muqaawel (DAAHER) who as a 2-y-o in this country was a moderate handicapper but then went to race in France where he won a decent 7.5f. Conditions race on Deauville's Polytrack.

Lasmuigh (TASLEET) was back in disappointing mode, raced prominently until going out like a light 2f. out. Meanwhile, Wujdaan (GLENEAGLES), who was making her debut, looked to have pinched the race as she went clear inside the final two furlongs until both horse and jockey appeared to run out of steam and was caught on the line by her stable companion and the 6/4 fav. Voce Del Palio (BATED BREATH).

Windsor    5.40                6f.                 Novices              Class   4           Good to Firm

All newcomers and none of them excite me. In what looks a below standard race I'm making a very tentative suggestion for Expert Agent (FSS EXPERT EYE), a half-brother to Al Rasmah (IFFRAAJ) a moderate handicapper at anything from 6-10f. but he was precocious enough to win on his 2-y-o debut at Chester.

Lot of hype before the race for the NIGHT OF THUNDER colt, Captain Wierzba probably because of the price connections paid for it, may well win races but didn't set the world alight here, having to settle for second place behind Paddy's Day (STARSPANGLEDBANNER). The winner just about made all and won with a bit in hand.

Saturday      May   21                  12.45 p.m.

Three races to look forward to for Sunday.

Nottingham     1.00                      5f.                 Maiden   Fillies         Class  5                 Good

Immortal Beauty (COTAI GLORY) showed lots of promise when third on debut behind Omniqueen at Ascot.  As no horse from that race has run since the standard of the form is unknown but the favourite that day, Annie Maher, was being strongly talked up by the TV pundits. Immortal Beauty is a  half-sister to Mehmento (MEHMAS) the winner of a 7f. Listed event at Epsom last year. Lady Hollywood (FSS HAVANA GREY), second to Fragrance at Catterick on her debut, heads the Racing Post Betting Forecast, she certainly finished with a rattle but I would have thought the Ascot form would be stronger (I'm no snob!). The SHOWCASING filly, Love Affairs, who will be making her debut is a half-sister to Arabic Charm (EXCEED AND EXCEL) a decent 7f. handicap winner last year.

Immortal Beauty became upset in the stalls and possibly injured herself as the jockey said she was hanging and "almost unrideable".  Yet again the race was won by a FSS GREY HAVANA filly, Maylandsea, always prominent she took the lead inside the final furlong and won by 2.5 lengths from Keep Bidding (RIBCHESTER) who was unlucky in respect that she had to wait for a clear run, will improve for this. Love Affairs was another who was denied a clear run, worth another chance.

Curragh   1.40          6f.               Fillies     Maiden                     Good to Yielding

Not a great deal of evidence to work with here but of what we have, points in the direction of Tanaiyla (SIYOUNI), her S.P. of 20/1 suggests not a lot was expected on her debut at Navan. If that is true connections would have been delighted with that run, showing signs of greenness by being slowly away and during the race but made steady headway throughout to take second place inside the final furlong. Finsceal Go Deo (KINGMAN) is half-sister to Ol' Man River (MONTJEU), the winner of the 8f. 2-y-o Group 2 Beresford in 2014, she has had a run when fourth at the Curragh in March, the form of that race hasn't really been franked. As you would expect there are a number of newcomers with interesting family connections, I'll just pick out two. Cyber Attack (FSS SAXON WARRIOR) is a half-sister to Royal Commando (NO NAY NEVER) the of the 6f; Listed Cammidge Trophy at Doncaster last year. Olivia Meralda (KODIAC) is a half-sister to King Of Hearts (SOCIETY ROCK), who ran second in the 7f. Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Ascot in 2018.

An all the way win for the KODIAC filly, Zarinsk but she had to repel the strong challenges of Olivia Meralda (KODIAC) and Never Ending Story (DUBAWI) inside the final furlong, just a neck and half-a-length separating them. I have the feeling this was quite a good race and there could have been a number of future winners in behind.

York            4.00               5f.     Novices              Class  4                   Good To Soft

Walbank (KODIAC) probably entered just about everyone's tracker after his debut when second to Noble Style at Ascot, with the rest of the field three lengths behind, jockey reported that he hung left late on. The other three runners could obviously improve lots on their debuts but it is difficult to get away from Walbank who is 4/7 at the moment.

The 4/7 soon disappeared and Walbank(KODIAC) had no difficulty landing the odds of 2/7. Beautiful Sunrise (EXCEED AND EXCEL) tried hard but dropped away entering the final furlong and was beaten 7 lengths.

Friday      May  20                   9.00  p.m.

A look at Saturday's busy 2-y-o programme.

Goodwood    1.10   6f.               Maiden  Fillies                 Class 4              Soft

Baccarat Baby's (GLENEAGLES) debut second to Katey Kontent at Salisbury looks a decent effort and has to be fancied. Two of the newcomers are worth mentioning; Lulworth Cove (NEW BAY) is a half-sister to Great Page (RODERIC O'CONNOR) the winner of a 7f. 2-y-o Group 3 at Deauville in 2015, Surrey Charm (HAVANA GOLD), is a half-sister to a useful Irish mile handicapper.

Baccarat Baby probably raced a bit too freely for her own good, leading as they approached the final furlong but unable to withstand the challenge of Fully Wet (KODIAC) who was running on well and going away at the line. There were a whole group of horses keeping on well just behind. This might be a decent race and an eye should be kept on most of them.

Curragh       1.35                6f.           Maiden                Yielding

Age Of Kings (KINGMAN) beaten a nose by Shartash over 6f. at Naas makes him the form choice. Blanc De Noir (SHOWCASING) a half-brother to Havana Grey (HAVANA GOLD) the winner of a Group 1 5f. at the Curragh as a 3-y-o in 2018 and is developing a successful stud career. One other, Congo River (FSS MENDELSSOHN), a half-brother to a useful Grade-placed sprinter in the United States.

Age Of Kings was a non-runner. The winner Hellsing (Dandy Man) just got the better of Congo River (FSS MENDELSSOHN) in a driving finish. Blanc De Noir didn't have the best of introductions to the sport, rearing up in the stalls and didn't show a lot as a result.

Curragh      2.10               6f.                  Group  3                       Yielding

Looks very competitive. Tough Talk's (KINGMAN) Curragh win looks very solid and hopefully he has come on for it.

Tough Talk (KINGMAN) was sent off the even money favourite but he proved to be no match for Blackbeard (NO NAY NEVER) who made all to win quite comfortably.

York  4.07                       6f.              Novices                   Class  3                       Good

Looking For Linda (FSS UNFORTUNATELY) is the 2/1 favourite and though he probably has the best form in the book I'm not convinced.  A tentative suggestion that Perfect Play (SIYOUNI) may turn out to be the best of these but given that his half-brother Ispolini (DUBAWI) was a vey smart stayer this trip may be on the short side.

Well, what can you say about that performance. The fact that Bradsell (FSS TASLEET) was made the 9/4 fav. suggested that connections knew the horse was decent but did they think they had a nine-length winner on their hands. Not surprisingly his stride did begin to shorten late on but that wasn't really surprising. How good is the form is the question? His reappearance is awaited with interest.

Musselburgh     3.03                     5f.  Conditions                    Class   2            Good

Of those who have had a run I think that Eddie's Boy's (FSS HAVANA GREY) debut win is probably the best and he looked to have the scope to go on from that. A mention for FSS HARRY ANGEL colt Arnie Angell, who is a half-brother to a winner of a  5f. 2-y-o Group 3 at Chantilly.

Eddie's Boy (FSS HAVANA GREY) was a rather uneasy favourite and the doubters were proved correct, after a prolonged duel he had to give best to Remarkable Force (ACCLAMATION) who looked on the TV to be a much bigger and stronger colt. Arnie Angell was a non-runner.

Lingfield                  7.45                 5f.     Novices               Class  5                     Good to Soft

Grace Angel (FSS HARRY ANGEL) is the 5/2 favourite at the moment, didn't have the luckiest run on debut when 5th. to Dramatised in a race that is working out quite well. Although she has been placed on both her outings I think it is fair to say that Favourite Queen (FSS MASSAAT) has disappointed her connections, no doubt she will win a race or two but when and where? One newcomer of interest, Lady Jane Grey (FSS HAVANA  GREY) a half-sister to Roman River (HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR) a useful sprint handicapper.

A very pleasing result as far as I am concerned and the sort of outcome I am looking for in each race, a horse that "the market" has missed, running well into at least a place and even on occasions winning. Lady Jane Grey (FSS HAVANA GREY), his fillies seem to be very precocious and FAST, despite dwelling in the stalls and being a touch green could soon be seen travelling well on the outside of the field and she kept on well to win going away. As I say, a very satisfying outcome and made the time spent worthwhile.

Thursday     May   19            12.30 p.m.

And the silly season begins 6 2-y-o races on Friday and the same on Saturday< the first real test of my commitment. I will probably become a little more selective otherwise I'll creating (more) cliches of my own.

Goodwood   1.00        6f.   Novices           Class. 4             Good

Kaasib (FSS U.S. NAVY FLAG) has created a good impression in his two runs, his Salisbury win being franked by the second that day, Democracy Dilemma, winning a nice race at Chester on his next outing. Royal Scotsman (GLENEAGLES) will improve for his debut fourth at Newmarket. Dayyan (KODIAC) was just over a length behind Royal Scotsman but he had already had two outings. There are quite a number of the newcomers who are well related. I'll pick out two to keep an eye on; Show Respect (SHOWCASING) is a half-brother to a successful Hong Kong-based 9-10f. handicapper, Mischief Magic (EXCEED AND EXCEL) a full brother to Sound And Silence, the winner of a Group 3 6f. 2-y-o race at Maison-Lafitte in 2017.

An impressive win for Royal Scotsman (GLENEAGLES) happy to take a lead from Kaasib until that one weakened and then running away from the field to win by 5 lengths. An encouraging run, on debu,t by Show Respect, Brian Meehan's horses are running quite well I notice.  I'm afraid Dayyan is proving very disappointing.

Bath  2.20              5f.                   Novices           Class 5                  Good to Soft

Commander Straker (KODI BEAR) seems the obvious form choice and there doesn't appear to be a anything among the newcomers to inspire interest.

A straightforward win for Commander Straker making all and the only concern was that one time the jockey got her knitting in a tangle.

Haydock             1.55         6f.           Maiden      Fillies            Class  4                  Good

Glorious Angel (COTAI GLORY) has run with credit in both her outings and looks the likely winner. Evolicatt (FSS MASSAAT) is becoming rather exposed but being trained by David Evans it would be no surprise if she found that touch of improvement necessary. I can see nothing of interest in the less exposed runners.

The 50/1 winner, Secret Mistral (PEARL SECRET) finished last of seven on debut, greenness and bad luck contributing to that, had obviously learned from that experience and despite still showing signs of inexperience kept on gamely to prevail. Clenched (CITYSCAPE), making her debut, was running on nicely at the death.

Haydock       3.05                  7f.                Novices          Fillies             Class 4            Good

The only filly with form is another rather exposed David Evans runner, Zephina (FSS ZOUSTAR), she has run four times already, consistently I must add, being placed in the last three efforts. As mentioned above improvement may still be to come. There are some interesting newcomers; particularly Lakota Sioux (FSS SIOUX NATION), she is a half-sister to the smart French stayer, Sheraz (SEA THE STARS). The Gosden-trained KINGMAN filly, Satirical, will probably be well fancied but I think this is a race to duck.

A very tight finish with four horses finishing within a length of each other. We were treated to a wonderful display of tail-swishing throughout the race by Lakota Sioux (FSS SIOUX NATION) but it didn't propel her to a win, she had to settle for third place, the winner, Inanna (ACCLAMATION) got loose before they went in the stalls, she was brought down of the outside and kept on to land the race in the last strides. Satirical (KINGMAN) was the well-supported 8/11f.but didn't have the clearest of runs (unlucky??) late effort to pinch second but failing to win. Zephina was also finishing well in fourth.

Curragh             4.25                 6f.                   Yielding

Twenty runners, nine with just the one run to their name and the rest newcomers, a very sharp pin could be of use here.

Slaney Tide (DAWN APPROACH) is a full-sister to Geometrical. who finished third in in a 2-y-o Group 2 over 7f. at the Curragh. She finished last of 7 on her debut run at the Curragh. The race that Panic Alarm (KUROSHIO) ran 4th, on debut looks quite strong and is probably the best on offer. Out of my depth to be honest. Good luck if you get involved.

A convincing win for newcomer Papilio (STARSPANGLEBANNER), not the quickest, soon racing midfield, ridden and quickened inside final 2f. In second place, Apache Outlaw (CHURCHILL) was running on late.

Catterick              5.53                    5f.                  Maiden                Good to Soft

Gemcutter (SIXTIES ICON) finished a close-up third last time but it was in selling class. Zakram (MARKAZ) is a half-brother to a useful 10f. handicapper but has shown little ability in his two runs so far. The one of interest for me is the PROFITABLE colt, Corporate Raider who is a half-brother Fox Power (DARK ANGEL) the winner of a Listed 8f. on Newcastle's artificial surface. Not a great race this and it's not going to take a lot of winning.

Don't think yhis is strong form but it went to Lady Beano (DANDYMAN)  from a fast finishing second Stunt Game (DANDYMAN). Corporate Raider (PROFITABLE) was quite a way off the pace until making ground for fourth late on.

Wednesday     May  18               10.00 a.m.

There is only one race for 2-y-os on Thursday and it's on my least favourite course. Don't get me wrong, I love Sandown but I find the 5f. course down the centre too difficult to work out, where is the best draw, do you want a frontrunner or a closer? I never seem to get it right.

Anyway, here goes.

Sandown   5.40                5f.                    Novices              Class 4           Good

Chasseral (EXCEED AND EXCEL) appears to have the best form, her third at Newmarket behind Dramatised has been somewhat franked by the second in that race coming out to win a small race at Hamilton very convincingly. There was a lot to like about Angelic Divas's debut third at Salisbury, slowly away, she was running on well late on; the winner that day Katey Kontent (FSS HAVANA GREY) has won nicely since. I'm interested in the reappearance of Amaretti Virginia (MEHMAS) , she is a half-sister to Ebro River (GALILEO GOLD), the winner of the 2-y-o Group 1 6f. Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh last year. On her debut at Wolverhampton she finished 4th. of 4 but only beaten 1.5 lengths by the useful, Knebworth. She is in Stall 1 and her two main rivals are in stalls 7 and 8. I know which one I WANT to win!

Another win for a FSS HAVANA GREY filly, they keep coming. An 18/1 shot, Cuban Mistress escaped my attention but she put in quite a nice performance here, quickly away from the stalls, made all and kept on well to repel two strong challengers. Despite some greenness, missed break and racing freely. Beautiful Aisling (HAVANA GOLD) made a very promising debut, just nicking second pace on the line, she's bound to be winning soon. Chasseral, the evens favourite, also ran freely but she could never get upsides the winner. I'm sure she'll win a race. I have to say that my hope for the race was rather disappointing, Amaretti Virginia had no excuses as far as I could see, she broke well enough, held her position on the rail but couldn't quicken when asked from two out, finishing fourth.

Tuesday             May    17               12.00 noon

Don't you just love some of the people who cover racing for television? Where would be without Simon Mapletoft, who in the past must have digested several editions of that invaluable publication "Racing Cliches That I Have Loved"? Or, dear old Thommo whose commentaries are identical to each other with only the names of the horses being different? They WILL be missed.

Any road up, on with the motley.

Four races to look at for Wednesday.

Ayr     1.35               5f.                 Maiden      Class 4                        Good to Soft

It would be no surprise if either, or both, of these who have had a run show a great deal of improvement, Montelusa (FSS WASHINGTON DC) has had the two outings, the second more encouraging than the first and Girl Magic's (FSS HAVANA GREY) mid-field finish on debut at Nottingham was not without merit,  the filly that finished second that day winning a hot Listed race atYork last week. The other FSS HAVANA GREY filly in this race , Georgiava, is trained by Karl Burke who also produced the winner of the York race mentioned above, she is a half-sister to Wahoo (STIMULATION) a useful handicapper over 7f.

The well-supported Girl Magic (FSS HAVANA GREY) recorded a rather straightforward victory, given a nice lead into the race by Montelusa  and going clear when asked for her effort. Green Zabeel (OASIS DREAM), the second favourite was disappointing, being the first one beaten. Georgiava(FSS GREY HAVANA) ran a decent race on debut, not the swiftest away from the stalls, she made ground on the outside and was running on at the death, never near the winner.

Yarmouth          2.00              6f.               Novices         Class 3                  Good to Firm

The only runner with form, Manwhothinkshecan (STARSPANGLEDBANNER) didn't show a lot on debut in a decent race at Newbury. As always consideration must be given to Charlie Appleby's runner, Changing Colours (DUBAWI), is a half-brother to Cosmic Desert (NEW APPROACH), a 3-y-o gelding who has been placed twice in his two 10f. maidens. The KINGMAN colt, Finn's Charm is a half-brother to the very smart, Charming Thought (OASIS DREAM), who as a 2-y-o in 2014 won the Group 1 Middle Park over 6f. at Newmarket. Betting should be interesting.

Just had another look at this race and I noticed that Think Climate (EXCEED AND EXCEL), is a full-brother to James Garfield, a very smart 6/7f. performer who won the Group 2 6f. Mill Reef at Newbury in 2017. JAMES GARFIELD has also made a promising start to his stud career. Apologies for missing this on first run-through.

Think Climate got upset in the stalls and was withdrawn. Finn's Charm (KINGMAN) set out to make all but was always stalked by Faisal Road (KODIAC) with Changing Colours (DUBAWI) the 5/6 fav. just on his quarters on the stand side. in the final  charge to the line Faisal Road prevailed from the Godolphin horse. The first three could all be decent.

Cork    5.40           5f.        Maiden               Good to Firm

Midnight Toker (ACCLAMATION) has run well in both of his outings and probably has the form to deservedly win this but life isn't fair is it? Distillate (FSS HAVANA GREY)  fifth on debut over this course and distance will benefit from that run, she is a half-sister to Deputise (KODIAC), a useful sprinter who thrived on an artificial surface. There is a newcomer who might be worth considering, Open Market (STARSPANGLEDBANNER) is a full-sister to Great Wide Open, placed second in two good races over a mile in the United States.

Obviously they had quite a bit of rain in County Cork yesterday, the expected good to firm, was described by the jocks as "proper soft ground" which could have been expected that the winner, Open Market, would appreciate as a daughter of STARSPANGLEDBANNER whose offspring appreciate some cut. She took the lead just after two out and never looked like being caught, even though Midnight Toker (consolation prize again, I'm afraid)  and Badb (FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND) were closing at the finish.

Kempton      7.00                 6f.                Novices         Class  5               Polytrack

Has all the signs of a two-horse race, Land Of Summer (CLODOVIL) the winner of a race at Brighton, that's not working out particularly well, having to give 7lbs. to Mont Champs (EXCEED AND EXCEL) who finished a three-length second to the useful, Beautiful Eyes over 5f. on this course last time. A possible improvement from the FSS JAMES GARFIELD, too green to do herself justice on debut at Bath, would bring her into the picture.

The support for the OUTSTRIP filly, Speriamo, from 4/1 to 9/4 suggests that improvement was expected from the debut fourth behind Primrose Ridge at Beverley. She looked quite a big filly, half-a-size bigger than the rest of the field, she fluffed the start but was soon prominent on the outside of the field, it looked as if she would pull away at one stage but she was made to battle by the game effort of the second Land Of Summer (CLODOVIL) who was carrying a 7 lbs. penalty. Speriamo held on by a NOSE.. Poppy Field, the James Garfield filly whose name I omitted from the preview (doh!) was very weak in the market and finished last.

Monday                 May  16                 10.30 a.m.

Feast or famine?  Only one race for 2-y-os on Tuesday

Nottingham  1.10              6f.       Maiden      Class 5             Good

There are two who have already had a run, Garner (RECORDER) and Grey's Monument (TERRITORIES) both came out of their races with some credit, respectively at Lingfield and Windsor, Grey's Monument was made 11/8f. on his debut. Obviously both have improvement in them. There are three newcomers worthy of interest, in my opinion. Courageous Knight (DUBAWI) the first foal of a DANSILI mare, Tarlo (KODIAC), a half-brother to Impeached Alexander, who won a 6f. 2-y-o race at Cork last year, and Unlimited Data (FSS TASLEET), who is trained by William Muir who produced his half-brother Data Protection (FOXWEDGE) to win nine races over 10f.

An all the way win for Garner (RECORDER) despite being weak in the market, he kept on well when ridden inside the final furlong.  Maxi King (BELARDO) created a good impression on his debut, despite being keen early on he finished well to grab second place on the line. Courageous Knight (DUBAWI) was disappointing, never looking likely to justify favouritism. I'm not giving up on Unlimited Data (FSS TASLEET) yet, 66/1, slowly away but was in touch, at the rear, until weakening late on.

Sunday             May  15

Quite a busy Monday for 2-y-o races - who said there is too much racing?

Carlisle   5f.                   Novices                 Class  4             Good to Firm

Six runners, all newcomers.

Carmentis (KODIAC), is a half-sister to Arnold Lane (FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND), a smart 7f. handicapper who was well placed to win a 6.5f German Group 3. Deguello (DARK ANGEL), is a half-brother to Springbank (GALILEO), a good middle-distance handicapper in Ireland. Queen Of Deauville (SHOWCASING) is a half-sister to Dutch Treat (DUTCH ART), a decent 7f. handicapper.

Deguello was a very naughty boy and had to be withdrawn after bolting to the start. The race went to Queen Of Deauville (SHOWCASING), she raced prominently, led inside final furlong and ran on nicely. Monte Firte (COTAI GLORY) tried hard to challenge but never looked like winning. Carmentis, never managed to go the pace.

Redcar  3.20                       6f.                    Novices            Class 5                 Good to Firm

Well, well, our old friend Legend of Xanadu (SIXTIES ICON), this time over an extra furlong and with a new man in the saddle. I'm more confident that William Buick's engagement is more of a positive change than the extra furlong would be but there doesn't seem to be a lot of strength in the opposition here, so do we give him one more chance?

Well, well, well is this the same Legend Of Xanadu? Change of trip and jockey was obviously expected to make all the difference, heavily backed into 8/11 and despite faulty steering early, challenged 2 out went clear 1 out and the further they went the further he went clear.

Leicester            4.45                      5f.                  Novices               Class 5             Good to Firm

Confederation (BRAZEN BEAU) probably has the strongest claims on form but he is becoming rather exposed. Rock Girl (PROFITABLE) ran a decent second to Lucy Lightfoot at Lingfield last time and Kingsbury's (BUNGLE INTHEJUNGLE) fourth on debut over course and distance last month was quite promising. Not really enthused by this collection and I will be keeping an eye on the FSS HAVANA GREY filly, Tagline, her half-brother managed to win a race at Chelmsford, a second place at Haydock and a win in Hong Kong, all at 6f. A bit left-field I suppose but what the hell, we're in it for the craic, aren't we.

An 80/1 winner would have been nice, not quite £175 million (not with my level of stakes) but it would have done wonders for both my ego and my profit and loss table. As it was Tagline (FSS HAVANA GREY) had to settle for second behind  another FSS HAVANA GREY filly, Union Court. Tagline was running on well but never looked like getting to the winner who travelled throughout and ran on strongly for pressure. Ahhhhhh!

Windsor          5.40                        6f.      Novices           Class   4                  Good to Firm

Quite a big field and the draw might well have a significant role to play but I have picked out three that are drawn low to middle. Mister X (PROFITABLE) is making his debut and the booking of Tom Marquand could be significant. Mister X is a half-brother to Capote's Dream (OASIS DREAM), the winner of a Class 2 handicap over 6f. at Windsor last year. Panama (FSS HAVANA GREY), third on debut at Bath where the Racing Post reporter named him as an eye-catcher, slowly away and then behind but making good headway late on. Approach Glory (COTAI GLORY) sent off a 66/1, didn't have the happiest of debuts, bumped at the start at Wolverhampton and after racing in mid-field made headway but was never able to get into the race, beaten just over four lengths into 6th. place behind Waiting All Night.

Congratulations to the Racing Post analyser for flagging-up Panama (FSS HAVANA GREY (isn't he doing well?) who battled on well to hold off Betweenthesticks (CAPTAIN GERRARD). The winner, who went off the 11/5 fav. didn't look to be going anywhere approaching a furlong out but he was switched and found some daylight just in time. These big field sprints at Windsor at not the easiest to read and you often find that you miss some action normally on the stands rail late on, in this one I picked out Coco Jack (WINGS OF EAGLES) being sharply switched right to get some space on the rail and running on strongly for fifth place, beaten 4.5lengths.

Saturday        May 14                     8.00 p.m.

Sunday's previews.

Naas  1.45                  5f.                       Good

Difficult to see The Antarctic (DARK ANGEL) being turned over here. He is unlikely to achieve the heights of his full-brother, the top-class BATTAASH but his win on debut suggests he's good enough for this event.

The Antarctic did win but not with the ease you would expect from 4/9 shot. He never looked as if he was going to be caught but he had to work to get the better of Mehmar, a first time out, MEHMAS colt. with his old? foe Wadao (SHOWCASING) back in third. The favourite will have learned a bit more and the second looks nailed on to win a nice race.

Naas  2.45                6f.                 Group  3                    Good

Matilda Picotte (FSS SIOUX NATION) the impressive all the way winner over course and distance earlier this month looks very difficult to oppose. Obviously there will be improvers in the field but there is every reason to believe she is capable of improving as much as any of them.

I found this a very disappointing result, after Matilda Picotte's very impressive debut win, I expected and wanted her to be a bit special. In my opinion, she wasn't given a great ride, too much daylight, ran too freely and lost two places in the last 50 yards. I can't take anything away from the winner, Meditate (NO NAY NEVER), he did all that was asked of him, tracking the leader and quickening up to win inside the last 100 yards. It's Showtime Baby (SHOWCASING) did well to take a close third after missing the break. Don't know what to think of the second, Comhra (VOCALISED), a winner over 7.5f. at Roscommon earlier in the week and dropping back to 6f. here, to me, she looked outpaced and beaten entering the final 2f. but she found something from somewhere and rattled home to pinch second place.

Ripon   2.40          6f.               Novices                    Class 4               Good to Firm

The two races at Naas appear to be straightforward (tempting fate?) this is a different bowl of pasta. Gulmarg (DANDY MAN) is the 5/2 fav. at the moment, he ran second in a four horse race at Pontefract on debut and the form of that race has worked out remarkably well, with the winner, third and fourth all franking the form. There are a number of these who are likely to improve for their debuts, such as Dukono (FSS EXPERT EYE), and, Shouldhavebeenaring (FSS HAVANA GREY), feel there must be an interesting story behind that name?,  There are also a couple of newcomers worth a mention; Common Acclaim (ACCLAMATION) is a half-brother to Albishir (CLODOVIL) who was only beaten a nose in an 8f. Listed 2-y-o race, the other one is Prince Nabeel (FSS SMOOTH DADDY), a half-brother to Felix (LOPE DE VEGA) a smart 8-9f. performer well suited to artificial surfaces. Much too difficult for this bear of very little brain.

Shouldhavebeenaring, another winner for FSS HAVANA GREY, he's doing rather well with his offspring, as at Goodwood the winner showed greenness at the stalls but recovered well and was always racing smoothly on the outside of the field then, despite hanging left, led inside the final furlong to win quite nicely. Of the others, perhaps Prince Nabeel (FSS SMOOTH DADDY) ran the most promising race.

Friday    May  13                 5.00 p.m.

On to Saturday's 2-y-o racing.

Navan  2.05                   5.5f.               Maiden           Good

Beauty Crescent (ACCLAMATION) who finished second to Crispy Cat on debut at Cork last month, is a half-brother to a filly good enough to run a creditable 8th. in the 2018 1,000 guineas. Wild Rover (FSS SAXON WARRIOR) looked a bit short of pace when fourth on his debut, over this course and distance, perhaps not surprisingly as he is a half-brother to a decent stayer in Japan. Lasmuigh (FSS TASLEET) didn't show a lot in a big field at the Curragh but he is a half-brother to a very smart handicapper in Hong Kong.

A very pleasing debut by Harry Time (FSS HARRY ANGEL), racing midfield he made smooth headway down the outside, took the lead one out and kept on well. Broadhurst (NO NAY NEVER) may have been a touch unlucky having to be switched one out, then finishing strongly for second. Lasmuigh (FSS TASLEET) put in a much better run, finishing fifth, just under 4 lengths off the winner.

Thirsk  2.20           Maiden       Fillies               Class    4              Good

Cotai Pearl (COTAI GLORY) finished second to Jungle Time at Musselburgh on debut, despite running green, and should come on a great deal for that experience. Flying Barty (STARSPANGLEDBANNER) was not without supporters for his debut at Newmarket but he had one of those "first day at school" experiences, reluctant to go into his stall, racing to keenly and eventually finishing 6th. of 10.

Flying Barty and Cotai Pearl barely sighted. Disappointing. The race was won by the FSS JAMES GARFIELD filly, Maria Branwell, she was always prominent and ran on strongly under quite a strong drive. Doubts about the form here, to my mind.

Newmarket        3.35             6f.             Fillies    Novices     Class 4        Good

Betting 11/4 the Charlie Appleby horse for this, so it doesn't look as if anything has been burning up the gallops. None of these have had a run so I'll just put up a few that might be worth considering. Flame Of Kodiac (KODIAC), no prizes for inventiveness in naming with this one, is a half-sister to a smart staying handicapper. Romantic Sunlight (FSS TASLEET) is a half-sister to Romantic Time (TIME TEST) winner of the Group 3 Dick Poole Stakes for 2-y-o fillies over 6f. at Salisbury. Creative Style (KODIAC) half-sister to Welcome Surprise, a moderate maiden in this country but did manage to win a mile maiden in the desert dirt. Finally, Fairy Cross (DUBAWI), half-sister to Willow Cove (SEA THE STARS) winner of a 9.5f. maiden at Wolverhampton in February and beaten into third in a Novice event since.

I have to admit that the very impressive winner, Mawj (EXCEED AND EXCEL), never appeared on my radar, he probably should have as he is a half-brother to Modern News (SHAMARDAL), a very smart miler for Godolphin. The rest of the field were beaten so far it is difficult to be too optimistic about their near future, perhaps Flame Of Kodiac deserves an honourable mention as not a lot went her way throughout but she was beaten over nine lengths.

Newbury   3.55              6f.          Conditions Stakes          Class 2              Good

Just the four runners but it sees the re-appearance of Persian Force (MEHMAS), who was very impressive when winning the Brocklesby, hopefully we can see a similar performance tomorrow. The jury is probably still out on the value of Holquin's (FSS HAVANA GREY) course win last month. The other two are newcomers but of interest; Sierra Blanca (NO NAY NEVER) is a half-brother to Somehow (FASTNET ROCK) who won the 2017 running of the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes over 9f. at Newmarket, completing the field is, Indian Renegade (FSS SIOUX NATION) , half-brother to useful mile handicapper, Brian Epstein (DARK ANGEL).

With Indian Renegade withdrawn only three went to post and Persian Force had no trouble confirming the good impression he made on debut in the Brocklesby at Doncaster. Held up, smooth headway to lead entering the final furlong and running on well, Holquin tried to give him a race but Sierra Blanca struggled to go the pace.

Doncaster       7.10                       5f.          Novices                Class. 4            Good

Six runners, four of them I had picked out as interesting but the favourite at the moment is Monty Man (FSS KESSAAR) who isn't one of the four but the colt is trained by Karl Burke whose whole yard of horses seem to be on fire with the 2-y-os performing exceptionally well. Just look at yesterday's results. Anyway, back to my four; Agostino (FSS HARRY ANGEL) is a half-brother to a very smart sprinter and he made a pleasing enough debut when third at Chelmsford last month, Ibiza Love (FSS U.S.NAVY FLAG) is a half-sister to Pleasant Surprise (MASTERCRAFTSMAN) who finished second in a 12f. Group 3 at Newmarket in 2017, Parr Fire (FSS JAMES GARFIELD) a half-sister to Dig Two (COTAI GLORY) a useful 2-y-o winner over 6f. last year, finally, Double O (FSS KESSAAR) , a half-sister to Edward Cornelius (BUNGLE INTHEJUNGLE) who ran second in a decent Class 2 Conditions race at Hamilton earlier this month. Interesting little race to watch, I think.

Thursday               May 12                   3.00 p.m.

Preview of Friday's 2-y-o races.

Newbury  1.30                 6f.              Maiden             Class 4                 Good to Soft

A big field of newcomers with two of them of major interest. Mysterious Night, a colt by DARK ANGEL is a half-brother to a horse placed in a Group 3 at Goodwood and went on to win two Graded races in the US of A. 8-9f. was her trip but she did win on her 2-y-o debut. The Foxes (CHURCHILL) is a half-brother to the very smart 8-10f. horse, Matterhorn.

Nice debut win for the STARSPANGLEDBANNER colt, Dark Thirty, making all and resisting the strong challenge of the favourite, Mysterious Night (DARK ANGEL). The favourite did nothing wrong and he only just failed to pinch it on the line. A number of potential improvers behind and any future runner from this race will deserve a look.

York. 1.50            5f.                       Fillies                  Listed              Class 1       Good

A big field with lots of strands of form, not really my cup of tea. From the breeding viewpoint I would lean in the direction of Lost Angel (DARK ANGEL), a half-sister to a smart 8f. horse in Ireland but there is probably better form represented by Miami Girl (COTAI GLORY) amongst others, too many to mention.

A very competitive sprint developed into a two struggle between two inmates of Karl Burke's stables, he appears to have a smart group of 2-y-os this year, Pillow Talk (KODIAC) just getting the better of Yahsat (DANDY MAN)). The winner looks to be a very game filly and I loved the way she put her determined little head down in a driving finish.

Leopardstown         5.10                         7f.     Maiden              Good

Two of immense interest here, both trained by A.P.O'Brien. The DUBAWI colt, Alfred Munnings, is a half-brother to the wide-margin winner of last year's Oaks, Snowfall (DEEP IMPACT), whilst the NO NAY NEVER colt Tenerife is a half-brother to Prosperous Voyage (ZOFFANY) second in this month's 1,000 Guineas. Ryan Moore rides the former.

Tenerife was a non-runner whilst Alfred Munnings (DUBAWI) ran an almost perfect debut, given a lead early, then moving into the lead over a furlong out and quickening to win comfortably.

Hamilton     5.40                       5f.          Novices     Class.  4                 Soft

I have the feeling that this could be Strength 'n Honour's (SHOWCASING) day. Malrescia's (ACCLAMATION) form is probably stronger and the stiff course and soft ground should favour this half-sister to the useful stayer Lismore but I liked the run, at Leicester. of the SHOWCASING half-brother to a decent 8f. handicapper. I'm not too concerned with his last run at Southwell where he had no luck in running. I just have that feeling and it can't be ignored.

It seems I wasn't the only one who thought it was Strength 'N Honour's day as he was backed from an opening 7/1 into 4s. We were wrong, of course, as the 1/2 shot Malrescia (ACCLAMATION) proved to a class or three better than the rest of the field.

Wednesday                May  11                10.00 a.m.

Three races to look forward to on Thursday.

Salisbury  1.30                     %f.        Novices     Class 4                  Good to Firm

The two that have had a run She's A Mirage (KODIAC) and Al Dasim (FSS HARRY ANGEL) don't inspire a great deal of confidence in me, though the latter's half-brother ran third in the 2017 Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot. Chateau, making his debut, is a HAVANA GOLD half-brother to a smart mile handicapper. Remarkable Force (ACCLAMATION), also making his debut is a full-brother to a useful 2-y-o in 2019.

A very messy race, with Al Dasim (FSS HARRY ANGEL) running all over Wiltshire, taking a couple out leaving the stalls and never really running in a straight line throughout but still finishing a neck second. Remarkable Force (ACCLAMATION), the winner of the race,  managed to avoid the mayhem but had to run on well to claim his victory. Chateau (HAVANA GOLD) was the chief sufferer of the seconds antics, bumped at the start and repeatedly had his ground taken deserves a lot of credit to be only just over a length behind in third place.

York       4.45                   6f.                 Maiden           Class 2.             Good

This race is notable for me because of the appearance of WOOTTON BASSETT's first 2-y-o runner of the season. If you have read the Old Boys On The Block section of the blog you will know I'm expecting big things from this stallion. The filly representing him today Ubettabequick (sounds as if she cost a bit) is a half-sister to a smart sprint handicapper. Again the two with form don't do a lot for me. One of the newcomers is definitely of interest, Tantalus, a KODIAC colt who is a half-brother to the very smart miler, Balty Boys.

It seems strange to me that on ground described as Good, Ubettabequick (WOOTON BASSETT), was a non-runner because of "unsuitable ground" - hey ho! The race went to the NO NAY NEVER filly Queen Olly, who was prominent throughout and staying on well to beat a NO NAY NEVER colt, Catch The Paddy, by three and a half lengths with another five lengths back to the third. perhaps the ground wasn't so Good after all?!

Strikes me as a bit

Newmarket    4.50                     6f.                 Novices           Class 4             Good

A rather disappointing field for a Newmarket 2-y-o race and the only runner I can work up any enthusiasm for is the SHOWCASING filly, Centre Court, her half-sister being a winner of a 10.5f. event for unraced 3-y-o fillies at Saint-Cloud.

Tuesday   May  10             2.30 p.m.

Wednesday sees the Dante Meeting open at York, where there is one 2-y-o race, Bath also hosts one juvenile race.

York       5.15              5f.              Novices            Class 2            Good

Honour Your Dream (DREAM AHEAD) and King's Crown (STARSPANGLEDBANNER) have met in both their races to date and it's a matter of paying your money and taking your pick. There are three interesting newcomers; Hartlingwold (COTAI GLORY), a half-sister to a smart sprint handicapper, Starmas (MEHMAS), a half-sister to a winner of a German Listed sprint event and, Talented (ARDAD), a half-sister to a smart 7f. handicapper who has a penchant for the Chelmsford course. A race to watch.

Thunder Moor (DANDY MAN) sixth of six when favourite on debut at Musselburgh, made amends in good style here, quickly away. made all, ridden 2 out and ran on well. King's Crown (STARSPANGLEDBANNER) was staying on close home but no threat to the winner

Bath.  6.00        5f.                     Maiden                Class 4               Firm

All but one have race experience. Rumstar (FSS HAVANA GREY) nearly overcame a number of difficulties on his debut at Windsor, slowly away and subject to traffic difficulties, but once he saw daylight ran on very well to only go down by a head to Dunningham Lad. I don't think he'll be much of a price but should win this.

Rumstar's (FSS HAVANA GREY) task became much easier with the withdrawal of Al Khasmeh at the start. Always prominent and running on well to win, nasty rule 4 though.

Monday       May   9                 2.30. p.m.

Three 2-y-o races scheduled for Tuesday.

Beverley            5f.   Novices             Class 5               Good

I'm finding it difficult to work up much enthusiasm for this one, on the face of it Teatime Tipple's second to Star Of Lady M should be alright but I'm not convinced. Signora Camacho's fourth on debut at Musselburgh wasn't a straightforward experience for her, bumped at the start and then suffering more interference during the race but she is heading the Racing Post betting forecast at 4/1. A race to watch as far as I am concerned.

Teatime Tipple became upset in the stalls and was withdrawn. Signora Camacho had a clear run this time and though she showed plenty of speed she was still rather green and ran out of steam inside the final furlong. The race went to Ramazan (KODIAC) who was prominent throughout and kept on when challenged inside the final furlong. The second -placed, Sanks A Million (PROFITABLE) was the hard -luck story, bumped at the start and just failing to get up. Professor Pesca (KODIAC) was green on debut, ducking left out of the stalls but was running on nicely for fourth place. One to note, perhaps.

Chepstow.  2.50            5f.                Maiden             Class. 5.         Good to Firm

What can I say? I'm even less enthused by this race than the one at Beverley. A sharp pin may be useful, not for me.

The rather weak favourite (6/4>2/1) Brave Emperor (FSS SIOUX NATION) looked uncomfortable on Chepstow's undulations so in the circumstances quite a creditable victory. Not sure about the strength of the opposition.

Lingfield     6.45                     5f.                Novices         Class 5             Polytrack

This is better, only the four runners but it sees the reappearance of Knebworth (AWTAAD) who made a good impression when winning easily on debut over course and distance last month. There isn't much evidence on the worth of that form yet though. Amaretti Virginia, a MEHMAS filly making her debut is of interest, she is a half-sister to Ebro River (GALILEO GOLD) who won the Group 1 6f. Phoenix Stakes for 2-y-os last year.

Fascinating race to watch but what to make of the form? Only four runners but only a length and a half separated them at the line. The favourite, Knebworth, certainly didn't win as expected and at one point looked short of a turn of foot (pundit thought the slow pace? didn't help), however he did get up and probably had something in hand. The second and third showed much improved form or did they? Fourth of four was Amoretti Virginia, the only newcomer, she acquitted herself quite well and will have learned a hell of a lot from this run.

Sunday        May  8

Monday is quite a busy day with five 2-y-o races.

Catterick   2.00        5f.              Maiden Fillies     Class 5           Good

Fragrance (OASIS DREAM) has two decent pieces of form to her name and should be good enough to take this. Of the newcomers, the HAVANA GREY (FSS) filly, Lady Hollywood is a half-sister to a decent mile handicapper and might be worth keeping an eye on.

Even though being rather weak in the market, Fragrance just about justified favouritism, always racing to the fore she had to withstand a very strong late challenge by the debutante, Lady Hollywood (FSS HAVANA GREY), who looks capable of winning a race.

Wolverhampton   2.10        5f.              Maiden                 Class  6.               Tapeta

Of those that have form I have a slight preference for Global Effort (GLENEAGLES), his two runs look pretty solid. I have to mention The Thames Boatman (FSS HAVANA GREY) who is a half-brother to a smart 7f. handicapper who also ran a place in a Group 3 at Newmarket.

Global Effort put in a rather disappointing effort, I thought. Setting out to make all but looking rather leaden-footed inside the final 2f. The race went to the RAJASINGHE newcomer, Waiting All Night at 12/1. The Thames Boatman (FSS HAVANA GREY) made a satisfactory debut finishing 4th. beaten almost 4 lengths.

Musselburgh       1.45               5f.   Maiden             Class  5                    Good

Chattel Village (MONDIALISTE) at 22/1 wasn't expected to win but ran well to finish third beaten a length by Zuffolo, none of the runners that day has run since, so we are in the dark as to how good the form may be. The debutante Kodi Dancer (KODIAC) is a half-sister to a 2-y-o who ran well in staying nurseries last year.

The EXPERT EYE (FSS) filly Cathy Come Home was a well-backed 2/1 favourite for this and comfortably justified the support, moving up on the outside of the field inside the last two furlongs and then quickening nicely. Finn Russell (CARAVAGGIO) made a nice debut making headeway late on to take third place.

Roscommon     4.25                     7.5f.               Maiden                         Yielding to Soft

This is quite a stamina test for 2-y-os in May, distance, stiff finish and softish ground. On form shown I have a slight preference for Panic Alarm (KUROSHIO), the race he ran fourth in at the Curragh looking to be of a higher standard than Comhra's (VOCALISED) second, also at the Curragh. I would think that any of the newcomers will be doing very well to make an impression without the benefit of a run.

The withdrawal of Panic Alarm made this a much easier task for the favourite Comhra and she had no problem landing the odds of 4/5, winning by six and half lengths.

Windsor     5.40           5f.            Fillies    Novices            Class 3                Good to Firm

Radio Goo Goo (FSS HAVANA GREY) and Katey Kontent (FSS HAVANA GREY) both have decent form to their name but I'm keen on another HAVANA GREY (FSS) filly, Mammas Girl, who is making her debut. She is trained by Richard Hannon who was also responsible for training her half-brother, Master  of War, a smart 2-y-o who won at Listed level and placed in Group company. Lighting obviously can strike twice can't it?

Two non-runners, one of them Mammas Girl (boo!). I was a bit confused by the market, I thought Katey Kontent would be just about evens or slight odds-on and she wasn't even favourite. That honour went to Radio Goo Goo, the market had it wrong, Katey Kontent (FSS HAVANA GREY),  broke well, made all and won by just over four lengths. Radio Goo Goo (FSS HAVANA GREY) chased the leader well but could never quite get to her. How good is the form? Royal Ascot suggested, Chappers?

Saturday     May  7                 9.30 a.m.

A quiet day Sunday with just the one race at Hamilton, and a tricky looking one at that.

Hamilton     3.50         5f.   Maiden           Class 3             Good to Soft

Quite a few of these have run against each other before but whether or not the result will be the same this time is another matter, as we know, a bit of experience can make a lot of difference. On the face of it, Legend of Xanadu's (SIXTIES ICON) third at Ayr last time looks solid form with both the winner and the second going on to win their next race. The stiff course and the rain softened ground should suit. Mind you there could be a number of improvers in there and I wouldn't want to taking a short price. Unitarian (FSS TASLEET), the only newcomer, is of interest, he is a half-brother to a horse that ran second in a 6f. Class 2 2-y-o  Conditions race at Doncaster in 2018. I must mention Florida Filly (FSS SIOUX NATION), 7th. of 8 on debut at Ripon she was very green, swerved right at the start, ran green throughout, even hitting the rails 2 out. She is a half-sister to a filly who won a 5f. 2-y-o Listed race at Newbury in 2019, so she should be better than what she showed at Ripon.

It's beginning to look as if Spirit Of Xanudu is horse that will always find one to beat him. After racing prominently he seemed to have the race won inside the final furlong but from under a very vigorous ride, JM Jungle snatched the race in the very last stride. I haven't given up on, the FSS SIOUX NATION filly, Florida Filly yet, missed the break again but a lot more organised this time making steady headway along the stand rails until a horse took her ground and she almost came to a standstill, her rider eased right down inside the last furlong.

Friday  May 6                  3.00 p.m.

Saturday's 2-y-o races.

Naas.  1.40        5f.           Maiden          Yielding

The two that are likely to head the market here, Little Big Bear (NO NAY NEVER) and Alexis Zorba (FSS ZOUSTAR) have already been given quite 'heady' marks by the Racing Post rater. The former's second on debut at the Curragh being franked somewhat by the horse that finished fifth in that race then running a half-length second to The Antarctic at Tipperary. Of the newcomers; Bossy Parker by KODIAC is a half-brother to a very smart winner of Listed mile event at Windsor in 2020, and Perfectlikethemoon (FSS EXPERT EYE) is a half-sister to a horse placed in an Italian Group 3.

Little Big Bear (NO NAY NEVER), the 4/9 shot, had no trouble justifying the odds, always travelling well just off the pace, taking the lead approaching the final furlong and going on to win easily. I thought the third home, Keepupwithmyempire (HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR) put in a promising debut and, some way behind, in sixth place, Bossy Parker (KODIAC) showed some early pace and is not without hope.

Naas      2.50                 6f.                      Yielding

Shartash (INVINCIBLE SPIRIT) finished third in Little Big Bear's race at the Curragh mentioned above, albeit 2.5 lengths back, and looks the better of the two with experience. There are two newcomers who stir some interest; Age Of Kings (KINGMAN) is the first foal of Turrett Rocks, who ran second to Ballydoyle in the 2015 running of the Prix Marcel Boussac  at Longchamp over a mile, the other is Yosemite Valley (SHAMARDAL), a half-brother to this year's winner of the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes over 10f. at Leopardstown.

Yosemite Valley was withdrawn after getting upset in the stalls, leaving just the four runners. Another odds-on winner but only just. Shartash (INVINCIBLE SPIRIT) raced in second place until being ridden to lead inside the final furlong but then had to battle hard to resist the challenge of Age Of Kings (KINGMAN) and only just holding on. The second horse's performance has got to be marked up because he was very green throughout the race and provided he goes the right way could be decent.

Ascot 2.55          5f.               Novices             Class 3             Good

Just two with experience in this; Redemption Time (FSS HARRY ANGEL) was 10/11 on debut at Newbury and finished third to Holguin, jury is out on that form, Dayyan didn't appear to achieve a lot when 5th. of 5 on his debut at Ascot but I'm fairly sure he's better than that. Perhaps the most interesting of the newcomers is Noble Style, a KINGMAN colt who is the first foal of Eartha Kitt, the winner of a 7f. Listed race at Newmarket. Banndar (DARK ANGEL), a half-brother to an Irish 7f. handicapper, and Royal Scotsman (GLENEAGLES), a half-brother to a decent 7f. 2-y-o last year, are also worth a mention.
Redemption Time (FSS HARRY ANGEL) was again not without his supporters and was soon in front in an attempt to make all but was swamped inside the final 2f. by a nice turn of foot by the favourite, Noble Style (KINGMAN) and the strong challenge of  Walbank (KODIAC). The first two showed some signs of greenness, so it would be no surprise if there was more to come. Dayyan showed disappointingly little.

Thursday     May 5             11.00  a.m.

A busy day Friday with four 2-y-o races.

Ascot    2.50.    5f.   Maiden Fillies                 Class. 4            Good

Six newcomers go to post, the two that interest me. Immortal Beauty (COTAI GLORY) a half-sister to the winner of a 7f. Listed race at Epsom and Omniqueen (FSS TASLEET), a half-sister to the winner of the 2018 5.5f. Portland Handicap at Doncaster.

Small field and, except for one, very tight betting.  Annie Maher (FSS ZOUSTAR) was made the 5/2 favourite but she could never quite get to the winner, Omniqueen (FSS TASLEET) who broke well and made all. The form should be OK, they were all professional and raced in a tight group. Royal Ascot here we come.

Nottingham   5.05      5f.             Novices         Class 5              Good

Looking For Lynda (FSS UNFORTUNATELY) was a promising second (slowly way) to Beautiful Eyes at Ayr on debut, that horse won comfortably at Kempton yesterday, and I can't see an alternative in the rest of the field. Likely to be a short price.

A comfortable win for Looking For Linda (FSS UNFORTUNATELY) the 6/5f. Smartly away ffrom the always in the van and although she had to be shaken up 2 out, ran on well.

Ripon    5.15                5f.           Novices.  Class  5               Good

One newcomer in this that catches my eye is, High Flying, a filly by FSS U.S. NAVY FLAG, whose progeny are showing up well so far, she is a half-sister to a smart Irish sprint handicapper. Quite a few have form but which has shown the best is the question? Favourite Queen's third at Brighton, Havana Angel's fifth at Windsor or Lily In The Jungle's winning of a seller at Redcar? I have a feeling we will see a much improved run from The Ridler on his fourth on debut at Ripon.

R The idler did improve for his run at Ripon but punters were on to it and he was made favourite at 9/4. The Ridler broke well was settled just off the pace and running about four horse-widths off the rail, Favourite Queen, the second favourite ran the rail and along with Havana Angel between them they were three in line entering the final furlong, under a strong ride from Hanagan, The Ridler forged ahead close home. I'm afraid High Flying (FSS U. S. NAVY FLAG0 got upset in the stalls and was always out the back in the race.

Cork  6.30                    5f.             Maiden                Good

There are two in this with what looks strong form, Lady Tilbury (BATED BREATH) second at Dundalk and Polar Bear (KODI BEAR) third at Cork, both on debut. My preference is for Polar Bear, I think the form of the Cork race is pretty solid with Crispy Cat involved. A number of newcomers to keep an eye on; Cosmic Bella (GLENEAGLES), a half-sister to a smart 10f. handicapper, Distillate (FSS HAVANA GREY), a half-sister to a very useful sprinter and Kodihill (KODIAC), a half-sister to a useful handicapper.

The market suggested that the punters agreed with my evaluation of the form, we may prove to be right eventually but on this occasion, Polar Bear the 6/5f. hadn't read the script and could only finish 6th. Lady Tilbury (BATED BREATH) broke well and raced prominently and then ran on very strongly inside the final furlong. The run of the second, Woman Chief (FSS SIOUX NATION) should be noted, unfancied at 20/1, slowly away but running on very nicely late on, looks well capable of winning a race over a bit further.

Wednesday  May. 4            12.00 noon

Only the one 2-y-o race on Thursday.

Chester           5f.            Maiden                Class 2             Good to Soft

Despite being a newcomer running against horses that have already showed a degree of ability, California Gem (CABLE BAY), heads the early market at 3/1. Racing Post ratings have Explicit's (FSS EXPERT EYE) second at Musselburgh as the best performance of those that have run. I'm prepared to give Democracy Dilemma (COTAI GLORY) another chance, his form at Windsor and Salisbury looks pretty solid to me. The only debutant of interest, in my opinion, is Estate (SHOWCASING), a half brother to a moderate 3-y-o maiden who ran third in a 8.5f. maiden at Nottingham last month.

Very pleased with this result and pleased with myself for getting it right. Democracy Dilemma, broke well, travelled well and made all and won going away.

Tuesday   May 3        3.30

Two races to look at for Wednesday and neither of them are my cup of tea.

Chester  1.30     5f.   Conditions Stakes        Class  2            Good

The traditional starter for Chester's May meeting, a 5f. blast from the stalls where a good draw combined with a fast start counts for so much. I have been impressed with both of Ocean Cloud's wins and she is reasonably well drawn in stall 4 but both her wins were at right-handed Kempton and Chester is left-handed and quite a bit sharper. I'll sit this one out.

Poor visibility at the course and my deteriorating eyesight meant I found difficulty picking them out early. The winner, Absolutelyflawless (RIBCHESTER  wasn't the quickest away and the Racing Post suggests she was hampered early but she was in a good position as they turned in, to take advantage of the cut-away rail position, running on well and winning with a bit in hand, I thought. Ocean Cloud raced on the inside in about third or fourth place and looked to have every chance entering the final furlong but the winner had too much pace for her. The 10//11 fav. Star Of Lady M (FSS HAVANA GREY) disappointed, racing too keenly and fading away to finish last of all.

Kempton.   5.30           5f.     Fillies       Novices          Class 4           Polytrack

Beautiful Eyes (BOBBY"S KITTEN)  would seem the obvious choice here but I don't see a lot of value in that bet. But the only one I can find to oppose it with is Adjani (FSS KESSAAR), a half-sister to a 6f. maiden winner on Dundalk's artificial surface.

Beautiful Eyes (BOBBY"S KITTEN) easily justified favouritism (11/8, I thought she would be shorter), breaking well, virtually making all and winning unchallenged. Mont Champs (EXCEED AND EXCEL) the outsider of the field at 22/1 was the only one closing at the finish and will no doubt improve for the run. Adjani (FSS KESSAAR) showed plenty of early speed but was treading water inside the final furlong.

Monday.  May 2      4.30 p.m.

Two races on Tuesday.

Lingfield   1.45          5f.   Novices           Class  5           Polytrack

A tricky race to sort out, all but one have raced already. Lucy Lightfoot (FAST COMPANY) has speed but doesn't look straightforward and the same can be said for Dazzling Gem (DANDY MAN). Rock Girl (PROFITABLE) was well beaten five lengths on her debut here in mid-April, Knebworth (AWTAAD) who won that race could be useful. I'm ducking this one.

Well the penny seems to dropped with Lucy Lightfoot, she put in a much more controlled effort here. She broke quickly made all and won unchallenged.
ed.
Wetherby  5.05            5.5f.       Maiden               Class   4                   Good to Firm

Five of the seven runners have raced already and you would think that the half-length second, Commander Straker (KODI BEAR) achieved behind Holguin at Newbury is good enough to take this. Bishop's Glory (COTAI GLORY) did well enough on his debut, second behind Absolutelyflawless at Southwell, and is a half-brother to a useful Irish handicapper at around a mile.

Breege, a STARSPANGLEDBANNER filly, made a sparkling debut. Racing keenly she took up the running inside the final furlong and cleared away from her field. Commander Straker (KODI BEAR) was 5.5 lengths back in second. Is the winner a smart filly or were the rest not up to much on the day? Time will tell.

Sunday     May 1              8.00 p.m.

A look at Monday's 2-y-o races.

Curragh 1.10.           6f.    Maiden            Good to Yielding

A big field here but I can't find anything to get too excited about. Of those that have had a run, Tiger Paw (FSS SIOUX NATION) is probably the pick on a third place when a beaten favourite at Dundalk. Of the newcomers two that I will be keeping an eye on are, Lasmuigh (FSS TASLEET), a half-brother to a smart miler in Hong Kong and Matilda Picotte (FSS SIOUX NATION) who is a half-sister to a useful 8f. handicapper.

Quite an impressive winning debut for the SIOUX NATION (FSS) filly, Matilda Picotte, she made just about all, was always travelling strongly and won unchallenged. Nothing caught my eye back in the field.

Curragh   1.45       %f.  Listed         Good to Yielding

Three runners with a one run/one win record take each other on. Blackbeard (NO NAY NEVER) is trading at 8/11. Only the one making his debut, a STARSPANGLEDBANNER colt, Vanguard Star, a half-brother to a smart 8f.handicapper on the A.W.

This turned into an epic duel between first and second favourites, Blackbeard (NO NAY NEVER) and Crispy Cat (ARDAD). Battle commenced two out and it was virtually in the last strides that Blackbeard got his head in front. A length and a half back Treasure Trove (SIYOUNI) was finishing nicely.

Bath.  1.56        5f.     Novices.   Class  4       Firm

Duchray (THE LAST LION), a winner on debut, disappointed last time. Amberdaay (ADAAY) and Coco Hill (ANJAAL) showed some ability on their debuts. A mention for one of the newcomers, Panama (FSS HAVANA GREY), already gelded, is a half-brother to a decent 2-y-o.

Plenty of money for the newcomer, Poppy Field (FSS JAMES GARFIELD), made 7/4 at the off but she was too keen early. Duchray ran better this time but couldn't cope with the strong finish of the newcomer Byefornow  (CHARM SPIRIT). Panama (FSS GREY HAVANA) missed the break and was always playing catch-up, did alright and was only beaten a length.

Beverley. 1.31      5f.   Novices          Class. 6          Good

The Beverley form of Let's Go Hugo (FSS UNFORTUNATELY) was given a boost with Zuffolo's win at Doncaster on Saturday. Even though Bara Lacha (MONDIALISTE) was a long way behind Primrose Ridge when third on debut at Beverley she was finishing very well and should improve. The only newcomer that appeals is Rock Opera (FSS UNFORTUNATELY), a half-brother to a useful 7f. handicapper.

A result for the punter here, Rogue Spirit (DARK ANGEL) drawn in stall 1 and the 5/2 favourite made all and though there were closers inside the final furlong he never looked like being caught. Rock Opera (FSS UNFORTUNATELY) ran OK but finished where all my sly each way bets come - FOURTH! - at 18/1.

  1. Very comprehensive and detailed reporting. Amazed to read you're nearly 80 - running a blog is very impressive at that age and hopefully you will continue. Enjoy the rest of the season.

    1. Cheers, Charlie - 77 is a long way short of 80, shirley? I'll be somewhat surprised if I can keep the blog going, past experience says I'll fail but I'm going to give it a go even if I miss a race or raceday ortwo. The evening meetings in high summer will pile up but I won't be looking at nurseries or races where all the runners are exposed. Thanks again for the response, replies, ideas, criticism will all be welcomed. I am almost housebound these days so any contact and conversation is appreciated.

    2. Don't feel pressure to cover all the races - the RacingPost require teams of full-time employees to do that! Be selective of race meetings when they start to pile up - otherwise you will burn out. Writing a blog can be a thankless task at times but you never know, when people are researching form or analysis your blog may come in very useful, even just for a small bit of info about a 2yo that ran green, or perhaps missed the break. All the best.
